Color the Chunk Long a Word Families

We’ve covered Color the Chunk pages for all the short vowel word families. And now, it’s time for long vowel word families!

This pack features 9 different long a word families: -ake, -ale, -ame, -ate, -ain, -ail, -ay, and two more r-influenced families: -air and -are.

Words with a single beginning letter, such as pain, are mixed in with words that include blends or digraphs, such as chain and train on each page.

draw a green dot to start reading at the beginning of the word

While focusing on the chunks at the end of words, we want to be sure that our learners start reading at the BEGINNING of the word, not at the highlighted word family chunk. If it helps, draw a green dot under the first letter of the word. Green means GO, so start reading there.

Just like all our other pages, learners color in the word family chunk in each word. Learners can use crayon, marker, or older readers may prefer a highlighter.

After coloring them all in, learners use those chunks to read the words. I love how the chunks “pop” out when they are colored in. SO helpful for struggling learners!!

You can extend the activity, and challenge learners who are ready, by asking them to write sentences on the back of the page with some of the words.
